ABOUT ME

Welcome!

My name is Ashleigh Meyer, and I'm a novelist and poet from South-Western Virginia. I've been a writer since I could hold a pen. I write everything from YA & children's literature, to Appalachian poetry and folk music.

In my fiction, I can't seem to escape the pull of young characters, childhood, and coming-of-age. I never meant to be a YA author, and yet, my Keeping Shiloh series has been a labor of love, and has grown into something much larger than I expected when I first conceived the idea at the age of 16. I developed an intense bond with Jude, the unstoppable heroine of the books, and that "relationship" fueled me to keep going.

As a poet, I'm a different person. I try to give life, breath and voice to Appalachia, a region that I adopted - or rather, the region adopted me. I try to use the landscape as a place to explore the idea of nativity and being. It's a very different process from writing fiction, and it's done in a very different head-space. I've always been fascinated by the writing process, and switching between plot-driven fiction and gut-driven poetry has taught me a lot about what it is to be a writer. To read my poetic ramblings and hear more about the writing process (or what I know of it, anyway), sign up for my newsletter, Out of My Write Mind.

When I'm not writing, I love playing the banjo, and being on the river. I'm a water-bug through and through, an avid hunter of swimming holes, and a jetski enthusiast. I'm a happily married mom of 2, with way too many projects and ideas, and not nearly enough time.

I love hearing from you, so feel free to head over to my Contact page and ask me anything, or just say hello!
